Relations between India and Pakistan have rapidly deteriorated over the past week. While the two countries likely want to avoid full-blown conflict, escalating tit-for-tat clashes and domestic pressure suggest that a broader escalation cannot be ruled out.

More cross-border attacks will heighten a range of security risks in both countries, and the military build-up along the Line of Control could lead to further military actions.

Meanwhile, India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty adds to Pakistan’s economic strain, threatening water security in the long term. Combined with market downturns and investor uncertainty, these pressures further hinder Pakistan’s recovery efforts and raise the risk of broader instability.
